John Summerlin was the husband of Delphia(Williams)Summerlin and the father of 6 shildren. One record says he was 42 when he enlisted in Johnston County, NC on 1 May 1862. I calculate he was 38-40. Nevertheless, although he was a farmer, he obviously was very committed to have left his family to defend the CSA at his age. Most conscripts and enlistees were in their 20s. Records show he was killed on 1 July 1863 at Gettysburg on the first day of Battle. I have tried to find him in burial records at Gettysburg, but have not had success to date. John was my husband's gg grandfather.

I would like to find out more about my ggranddad's service. By his discharge papers he was on a roll of honor at Gettysburg but he is not listed on general orders that I have looked up. He was severely wounded at Gettysburg, was hospitalized in Richmond, and returned to fight. Eventually died from complications of a war injury (bone infection in a finger) by family report.

I have seen William Bailey Royall’s last name misspelled as “Ryall.” His father, also William Royall, served as regimental chaplain early in the war. I am interested to know which battles W.B. Royall fought in and if he was present at Appomattox.
